Whether you’ve always wanted to be a parent or have never given it any thought, an unplanned pregnancy can accelerate your need to decide how you feel about parenting.

And while many women immediately feel pressure to abort when faced with an unplanned pregnancy, you owe it to yourself to take the time to consider every option carefully.

If you’re thinking about carrying your pregnancy to term, you likely have lots of thoughts whirling through your mind. Here are some questions to ask yourself to assess the option of parenting.

Am I ready to be a parent?

If an unplanned pregnancy sped up your plans to one day be a parent, don’t panic. Parenting is still possible, even if it’s not what you had in mind for this season. In fact, even women who plan to get pregnant often feel overwhelmed or nervous about becoming a mom. Take a deep breath, and consider these factors to help determine if you’re ready to be a parent:

Is your partner in the picture?

Having a strong support network starts with your partner. Have you told him yet about the pregnancy? Is he supportive? You may need to dig a little and ask more questions to determine how he truly feels. Most men default to supporting whatever decision you think is best, but it’s important to know how he’s thinking about the pregnancy, too.

Do you feel supported?

Depending on your stage of life, you will likely need the help of your parents, close friends, and/or other family members during pregnancy and beyond. Do you currently have a strong network who can help? If not, what can you do to build the network?
